XH saw the kids today

for the first time in a few months. He lives about 5 hours away.

In his usual fashion, XH came to see the kids early this morning and left around 2pm this afternoon.

When he was here, DS asked about the video game that XH had told him he bought for DS for Christmas. XH told him that if DS will come visit, he can have his video game – and that the girls can have their Christmas gifts then too.

They said, “Why don’t you pick us up & take us down there, then?”

He said, “Well, your mom won’t ever drive you down there – and now I have to take classes so I can help take care of youngest DD.”

Oldest DD said, “Mom has offered to meet you half way – and besides, you have to want us to come.”

I was in the kitchen or my bedroom when these things were said – or just going around in the house doing whatever I was doing – cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. – not in the same room as them. I could hear it all b/c the house isn’t very big. I was going to leave, but with youngest DD’s recent diabetes diagnosis, XH said he’d feel better if I was here since he didn’t know how to handle an emergency should one come up – so I stayed.

XH also told the kids, as they were playing Uno Attack! that oldest DD is his favorite – although he loves them all the same. I have no idea why he did that – it makes no sense. I cannot imagine what he thought it would accomplish.

XH is now dangling a Spring Break trip to Florida or Las Vegas and a summer vacation cruise in the Bahamas in front of them. He said that he wants to get the diabetes education classes out of the way so the kids can come with them. I hope he follows through – it’s awful to see how it hurts them when he doesn’t. The kids would love to go – but after being out of school all last week for ice/snow, the school district has not said how those days will be made up. Once that’s announced, I will let XH know, so he can plan around their school breaks & hopefully it will work out.

Shantaram director named

I’m so happy that ‘Shantaram” has a director – from what I’ve seen, Nair, with her eye for detail, will be perfect for the job.

Nair, Depp journey to India film
Director hitched to ‘Shantaram’

Mira Nair will direct big-budget Johnny Depp starrer “Shantaram” for Warner Bros. Pictures, with Graham King’s Initial Entertainment Group and Depp’s Infinitum Nihil producing.

Brad Pitt’s Plan B is a producer as well.

Nair’s arrival means the project –which may be Depp’s next starring vehicle after “Sweeney Todd” — is back on track after helmer Peter Weir dropped out last summer. Production is likely to begin as soon as this fall, with a possible 2008 release.

Nair will direct from a script by Eric Roth, who is adapting Gregory David Roberts’ tome of the same name. Novel is based partly on the author’s own adventures, according to publisher St. Martin’s Press.

In “Shantaram,” an Australian heroin addict escapes from a maximum-security prison and reinvents himself as a doctor treating the destitute in the slums of Bombay. His drive to procure medicine leads him into counterfeiting, gun-running and smuggling.

King said Nair’s “lush visual style’ lends an “authentic and vital eye” to the story.

Nair next will be in theaters March 9 with Fox Searchlight’s “The Namesake,” based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. Pic is her first since Reese Witherspoon starrer “Vanity Fair,” released in 2004.

Most of her films have been about her native India, including her debut feature “Salaam Bombay!” and “Monsoon Wedding.” Other credits include “Hysterical Blindness.”

Initial Entertainment and Infinitum are producing through their deal with Warners (Infinitum is an Initial company). Projects in the works include “A Long Way Down,” based on Nick Hornby’s novel, which scribe D.V. DeVincentis is adapting, and “Bomb,” based on the book by Dr. Mahdi Obeidi, Saddam Hussein’s top nuclear weapons scientist, and American journo Kurt Pitzer.

Infinitum and Initial also are developing “Happy Days,” based on the novel by Laurent Graff. Terry Zwigoff is attached to direct from a script he will co-write with Jerry Stahl.

Nair is repped by Creative Artists Agency; Depp by UTA.

9. For the past 2 days, they’ve been sledding with my sister & her children in the afternoons. They’ve had a blast!

10. We’re not used to ice and snow in Oklahoma – I’ve seen some really crazy driving this week.

11. We’ve been advised by local weather forecasters to expect 3-6 inches of snow this weekend.

Back to school

The kids went back to school after Christmas break today. Oldest DD went to the same school, but DS and youngest DD started at a new school today. When we moved in December, that put us in a different elementary school’s zone, so they finished the semester at their old school & started fresh today.

I was really nervous with DD’s diabetes – but the faculty & staff were wonderful and I left feeling that my kids were in a great place. DD did great with her injection at lunch time & checking blood sugars before PE.

DS made new friends & liked his teacher a lot. DD also made new friends & thinks her teacher is great. They both came home happy & full of stories about their new classmates.

They’ve both signed up for the 5th & 6th grade volleyball team already. Practice starts on Jan. 11. They’ll have practice on Mon – Thurs afterschool until 5:15pm. On Wednesday nights, practice is over at 5:00. I’ve not seen a game schedule, so I have no idea what dates/times yet.

I know nothing about volleyball. Never played outside of a few games at church camp. Have never gone to a real game. That will soon change, eh?
