Thursday Thirteen #35

Thirteen Random Thoughts from Natalie

1. We’ve only got to wait a few more weeks until Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest comes out on DVD. Are you planning to purchase it? Isn’t Cap’n Jack one of the best movie characters ever? I think Johnny Depp’s vision for him was/is so clever.

2. I’ve been packing since we’ll be moving soon. I’m so ready to not have these boxes stacked up all over the place.

3. 11 yr old son & 10 yr old daughter will be going to a new school for the spring semester. 13 yr old daughter will not be switching schools in January.

4. Next year (2007-08 school year), all 3 children will be switching schools. Youngest daughter & son will be in middle school (with all their friends from their current school & from the new school) and oldest daughter will be in high school.

5. I’ve not done much Christmas shopping yet. Have you?

6. My energy has been focused on moving, transferring utilities, basketball season – things like that.

7. I read, Chocolat by Joanne Harris this past week. It’s a cute book – not a deep read. I especially liked Roux the gypsy (probably because my mental eye had Johnny Depp wandering around in my head).

8. I’m currently reading, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. The author is excellent. The book is hard to put down.

9. Since I’ll be moving the first week of December, I’m going to put up my Christmas decorations right away. I already know just where the tree needs to be – just to the side of the big windows in the living room.

10. Last year, I participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). This year, I am not participating. I have too much going on. But I plan to participate next year. It was hard work, but the sense of accomplishment after I finished was wonderful! Are you partipating? Do you know anyone who is?

11. How many spaces do you put at the end of a sentence? I was taught to use two spaces. I guess there’s been some controversey in proof-reading/writing circles about whether it’s best to use one space or two at the ends of sentences.

12. I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately & not posting much. I think it’s these boxes stacked up all over my home. They really bother me. A lot.

13. When you send emails to business associates/co-workers, do you use salutations and sign offs? Or do you just start typing as if you were standing there having a conversation? People that I work with are very casual with email and it drives me nuts. I find it very unprofessional. See number nine on this list by Judith Kallos.

  1. “Pirates of the Carribean” will be on local TV here next week. I can’t wait, since I haven’t watched it on the theater…

    Happy Thursday!

    /gabrielle.

  2. love me some johnny deep as jack. mmmm mmmm mmmm

  3. mmm…Captain Jack Sparrow!!! YUM! LOVE your T13 header! My blog designer, Megan, did a beautiful background for my blog of him! And yes, two spaces, please.

  4. LOVE LOVE LOVE Johnny…when does it come out??

    2 spaces please.

  5. I love both movies! They were awesome!

  6. Great post and good luck with the move

  7. i’m supposed to be participating in nanowrimo, but i haven’t started yet!

i already put up our Christmas tree. πŸ™‚

  8. I am still shocked at how well Johnny played in that movie. I didn’t even recognize him right away. He did phenominal in that role.

  9. Oh Johnny is soooooo dreamy. **sigh** (I am teasing of course…I don’t swing on that side of the plate…lol) I really liked your TT list and mine is up too. Happy TT!
    ~ Joe

  10. Hm, I was taught 2 spaces after a period and I always address email as if it were a formal letter, especially if it is infact a formal letter…
    kind regards,

  11. you’re like me, i did nanowrimo last year, but this year, I’m just not motivated. i said I’d finish my second book instead, but so far, i’ve been too busy, or too lazy, not sure which. πŸ™‚

  12. Great list. Will look for Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. And then I’ll add it to my neverending pile of books to read. Which means I’ll get to it– oh about– 2010!

  13. 2 spaces is what I know as well.

Funny, but I still have to watch Pirates of the Carribean 1 and 2. It must really be a very good movie πŸ™‚ I have to find time to watch both soon.

    Happy Thursday!

  14. You should have called this post thirteen random questions instead πŸ˜‰

I don’t buy many DVDs (I think I’ve bought 3, ever) so I won’t be getting that one. But I agree, he’s great as Captain Jack.

I bet you’re getting excited about the move πŸ™‚

I’ve started Christmas shopping but won’t be done til Dec. 24th. It’s tradition.

Not doing NaNoWriMo this year, but I AM going to get my darn book proposal finished and mailed out before the end of the year. Guess I better hurry.

I was taught two spaces as well. And apparently I still type them most of the time without thinking. But I think most people use one now.

I probably annoy people with my emails, since about half the time I just start typing. The salutations bug me especially if it’s coming from someone sitting 7 feet away πŸ˜›

  15. I vote for two spaces after a sentence.

  16. #11 caught my eye. I was also taught 2 spaces at the end of a sentence. But, I find that WORD will catch it as a mistake. Looks nicer with 2 spaces, and I also automatically hit the space bar after a comma.

    My Thursday 13 is up.

  17. 2 spaces is now incorrect. We used to do 2 spaces becuase of the way typewriters worked, but now with the computer, it’s not needed.

    Have a happy Thursday!

  18. I was always taught to use 2 spaces at the end of a sentence, but that was in “Old School Typing Class 101.” It seems my computer corrects me sometimes, changing my two to one.

Because I’m always game for a hearty battle of the wills, I will continue putting two just to piss my computer off.

    That’s how I roll!

Great TT! Love the random ones.

  19. Two spaces. And just in case you’re ever investigated by the gov’t and they make your e-mails public, I’d put them in good form!

Thanks for visiting my TT and good luck with the move.

  20. Great list thanks for sharing. Its very nice of you to let your oldest finish up Middle School with her friends.

  21. Christmas shopping? Say it ain’t so!

  22. thanks for visiting my TT! have fun with the Susskind – I read it in a book group a few years ago – very cool – they’re soon to do a movie on it, er rather I believe it was already released in Europe or something… anyway keep your eye out πŸ™‚

  23. I think Johnny Depp is dreamy! I remember and loved him in 21 Jump Street. They used to film in my little town in BC. I haven’t seen Pirates yet, I was busy with baby so I’m looking forward to renting it. I loved him in Chocolat – great movie, how’s the book?

  24. The MLA standard on your punctuation question is here: “http://www.mla.org/style/style_faq/style_faq3

MLA is the standard that “governs” for lack of a better term, how papers, etc. are written. (Remember those pesky bibliographies at the end of term papers that had to be written “just so”?)

In case you don’t wish to go read, the current acceptable standard is: “Because it is increasingly common for papers and manuscripts to be prepared with a single space after all punctuation marks, this spacing is shown in the examples in the MLA Handbook and the MLA Style Manual. As a practical matter, however, there is nothing wrong with using two spaces after concluding punctuation marks unless an instructor or editor requests that you do otherwise.”

So the answer is, “Both.” hehe

    LOVE Johnny Depp!

  25. Interesting list. I wish you much happiness in your new home. Thanks for the update on the punctuation tiggerprr.

    Thanks for visiting my TT.

  26. I loved Chocolat, and I thought the movie was really good too. I rarely like both, and usually like the book much better. Great list, I hope your move goes smoothly! Happy TT and thanks for visiting my blog.

  27. Thanks for the suggestion #8, I’m looking for a new book to read!
We’re actually going to wait until all 3 POTC come out in a set. We bought the first one, and then we found out there were going to be 3!

    Have a great weekend! πŸ˜€

  28. Two spaces? I always use two spaces, but now I don’t know. I will have to check when I do my next chapter for NaNoWriMo. Currently my word count stinks. But not as bad as my story. This is my first attempt.

  29. I’ll be buying the movie. I’m almost done my Christmas Shopping.

    Thanks for stopping by.
