quotes

These are a few quotes I saw today that I really liked.
The pics were added to make the post a bit prettier. 🙂

It is a blessed thing that in every age someone has had the individuality enough and courage enough to stand by his own convictions.
~Robert Green Ingersoll

To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human can fight, and never stop fighting.
~E. E. Cummings

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
~Friedrich Nietzsche

The great challenge which faces us is to assure that, in our society of big-ness, we do not strangle the voice of creativity, that the rules of the game do not come to overshadow its purpose, that the grand orchestration of society leaves ample room for the man who marches to the music of another drummer.
~Hubert H. Humphrey

We are all worms, but I do believe I am a glowworm.

May you always feel loved

May you find serenity and tranquility in a world you may not always understand. May the pain you have known and the conflict you have experienced give you the strength to walk through life facing each new situation with courage and optimism. Always know that there are those whose love and understanding will always be there, even when you feel most alone. May you discover enough goodness in others to believe in a world of peace. May a kind word, a reassuring touch, and a warm smile be yours every day of your life, and may you give these gifts as well as receive them. Remember the sunshine when the storm seems unending.

Teach love to those who hate, and let that love embrace you as you go out into the world. May the teachings of those you admire become part of you, so that you may call upon them. Remember, those whose lives you have touched and whose have touched yours are always a part of you, even if the encounters were less than you would have wished. It is the content of the encounter that is more important than the form.

May you not become too concerned with material matters, but instead place immeasurable value on the goodness in your heart. Find time each day to see beauty and love in the world around you. Realize that each person has limitless abilities, but each of us is different in our own way. What you feel you lack in the present may become one of your strengths in the future. May you see your future as one filled with promise and possibility. Learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience. May you find enough inner strength to determine your own worth by yourself, and not be dependent on another’s judgment of your accomplishments. May you always feel loved.

what’s that word again?

Suzanne went shopping for her mom during lunch today. When she got back, she told us what she bought.

Phoebe was one the phone and when she finished her conversation, she asked what all she had gotten when shopping.

Monica said, “She bought a paper towel dispenser, a heater and two Afghanistans.” At our funny look, she said, “You know, those throws for the couch.”

Phoebe – “Where do you buy those Afghanistans?”
Monica – “Spencer’s.”
Phoebe – “By the way, you mean AFGANS, right?”
Monica – “Oh, yeah. I couldn’t remember that word.”

Silly girl.

big imagination?

A few months ago, when youngest daughter (10) stayed over at my sister’s house & got scared after watching “Hide and Seek,” I told her that she got scared so much because she has an overactive imagination. She asked me if that meant that people who like scary movies don’t have a big imagination – I told her that I guess that could be true, but probably they’re just not scared by movies for some reason – probably because they remember that they’re only a movie & not real.

Tonight, my sister took her 2 teenagers to see “The Grudge 2,” and her 2 youngest stayed with us. When she came to pick up the girls, my lovely daughter who has selective memory said, “My mom said you don’t get scared by scary movies because you don’t have a very big imagination.”

That is NOT what I said – but how do I explain that to my 10 yr old who insists that I did say it? Good grief.

Gobble gobble gobble!

tail – or – mullett?

Overheard:

So, I told my boyfriend that he cannot make fun of my kids’ tail (hair). His kid has a mullett and that’s worse!

Uhmmm, yeah. She really said that. I did not imagine it.

Didn’t tails go out of style when New Kids on the Block did? And how is a tail better than a mullett? Am I even spelling that correctly? Does it have 2 L’s and 2 T’s? Good grief. That’s a sign that I have avoided anything to do with that hairstyle – even spelling it is appalling.

ambulance – how do you say it?

AMBulance

or

ambuLANCE

??

I say AMBulance. Always have. Whenever I hear someone saying ambuLANCE, it sounds really strange to my ears.

I heard two people talking today & it took me a minute to figure out what they were talking about because they were saying ambuLANCE and it sounded so foreign to me.

iPod lineup

The Dave Ramsey show always winds up playing first – whether it’s first, last or in the middle of the podcast lineup on my iPod.

I just noticed this about a week ago & now I test it each day to see if it keeps happening.

It does.

basketball game, music program & asthma

Son’s team did not win their game today – it was their first loss and the boys were really disappointed. They lost by 12 points. Son played really well and was a good sport. I’m proud of him.

Youngest daughter’s music program was tonight. She had a solo and did really well. She’s been singing/chanting her part for ages & finally got a chance to perform. She loves to be in front of an audience & just glows when it’s her turn to speak or sing. Her voice didn’t waver, she smiled & seemed happy and relaxed.

Oldest daughter had to see the doctor yesterday for her asthma. It’s been years since her breathing was so poor. The doctor switched her to a different medicine and she’s feeling better today, although not quite normal, still.

‘ello Beastie!

Guess which movie is now at the local discount movie theatre?
Yep!
Dead Man’s Chest

Guess who went to see it tonight (again)?
Yep!
Me & the kids!

Have you seen

the Johnny Cash video that premiered today?

These are a few of my favorite parts of the video (not Johnny Cash, by the way):

an example

When I email back & forth with friends, I think nothing of starting an email like a conversation, no salutation, no closing line, just a conversation – but that’s with friends. In a business setting, I guess I’m just old-fashioned. I cannot imagine using chatspeak when emailing a business associate.

Here’s an example of the casual business emails that drive me nuts.

Hi {name},

Do we have the option of signing up for the Roth 401K instead of the
traditional 401K? If it’s an option for us, I’d like information
regarding the plan.

Thanks!

Thursday Thirteen #35

Thirteen Random Thoughts from Natalie

1. We’ve only got to wait a few more weeks until Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest comes out on DVD. Are you planning to purchase it? Isn’t Cap’n Jack one of the best movie characters ever? I think Johnny Depp’s vision for him was/is so clever.

2. I’ve been packing since we’ll be moving soon. I’m so ready to not have these boxes stacked up all over the place.

3. 11 yr old son & 10 yr old daughter will be going to a new school for the spring semester. 13 yr old daughter will not be switching schools in January.

4. Next year (2007-08 school year), all 3 children will be switching schools. Youngest daughter & son will be in middle school (with all their friends from their current school & from the new school) and oldest daughter will be in high school.

5. I’ve not done much Christmas shopping yet. Have you?

6. My energy has been focused on moving, transferring utilities, basketball season – things like that.

7. I read, Chocolat by Joanne Harris this past week. It’s a cute book – not a deep read. I especially liked Roux the gypsy (probably because my mental eye had Johnny Depp wandering around in my head).

8. I’m currently reading, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. The author is excellent. The book is hard to put down.

9. Since I’ll be moving the first week of December, I’m going to put up my Christmas decorations right away. I already know just where the tree needs to be – just to the side of the big windows in the living room.

10. Last year, I participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). This year, I am not participating. I have too much going on. But I plan to participate next year. It was hard work, but the sense of accomplishment after I finished was wonderful! Are you partipating? Do you know anyone who is?

11. How many spaces do you put at the end of a sentence? I was taught to use two spaces. I guess there’s been some controversey in proof-reading/writing circles about whether it’s best to use one space or two at the ends of sentences.

12. I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately & not posting much. I think it’s these boxes stacked up all over my home. They really bother me. A lot.

13. When you send emails to business associates/co-workers, do you use salutations and sign offs? Or do you just start typing as if you were standing there having a conversation? People that I work with are very casual with email and it drives me nuts. I find it very unprofessional. See number nine on this list by Judith Kallos.
