Happy Birthday Oprah!

Today is Oprah Winfrey’s birthday (1954). I guess I should wish her a happy birthday, since my oldest daughter thinks that Oprah has been a better mother to her than I have been. She told me this yesterday, as I was standing my ground about the cleanliness of her bedroom.

Oprah is a better mother because, “she knows what she is talking about.” I don’t know anything these days.. afterall, I am the meanest mom in the universe….having that title takes away brain cells, you know.

I guess oldest daughter missed the Frey incident on Oprah’s show this past week. (pretend I’ve inserted an eye-rolling smiley face here) I wonder if seeing Oprah lambast an author that she previously publicly supported would change her view of her surrogate/pretend mom. It has tarnished my view a bit, I have to say. But this isn’t about that really, is it?

I didn’t mention to oldest daughter that Oprah wouldn’t put up with a messy bedroom or backtalk & that perhaps the reason Oprah didn’t have children was to avoid having children with messy bedrooms & smart mouths.

Oldest daughter has since apologized. I just found it ironic that she said that yesterday & today is Oprah’s birthday.

Tired

I’m exhausted. This cleaning of the bedrooms battle has got to end. It’s been an all day affair with these girls. First oldest daughter in the morning, then youngest daughter when she got home. Son, love his heart, just cleaned up his room so he could go out & play. Why can the girls not just clean so they can be done with it & play? Why be difficult & so willful? I’m sure I’ll never know the answers to those questions.. so I’ll just let them go.

I’ve decided that I will have to check their bedrooms every night.. like I did when they were MUCH younger. I have, for the past few years, been letting them handle it, thinking it would be good for them to have some control & privacy. Obviously, it is not working & good habits have not been established. So, we’re making some changes around here in our bedtime routine. FUN.

I was talking about my oldest daughter’s negative preteen attitude in the forum that I help moderate. I posted a link to an article about positive thinking that I’d found this morning. I referenced the article b/c I’ve been trying to help oldest daughter become more positive.. as she has been progressively more negative the past year or so.. the whole preteen-I-know-everything-and-Mom-knows-nothing attitude… well, and a negative viewpoint in general..about EVERYTHING. After reading some of the forum comments, I started thinking about how I was as a child and how that relates to how I parent my children.

I was not a social butterfly type person.. I’m still not. At work, for example, everyone knows who I am, they know what I do and what I can help them with.. but not many KNOW me personally. People tend to tell me more about themselves than I share with them. Maybe this means that I’m reserved.. although I don’t think I am reserved at all once I trust someone. I’m not very reserved in my blog, because I consider it a journal shared with friends.. so you all know more about me than many of my coworkers do. Lucky you! πŸ™‚

In school it was the same way. Everyone knew me. I knew everyone else. But I was friends with 4 or 5 people. Really good friends. And that was it. During high school those friends grouped together & betrayed my friendship. After that I didn’t have any close friends. I was hurt deeply. I wonder if that effects how I form friendships today. I don’t have many… real friends, that is. I have my mom, my sisters and a select few that I consider REAL friends… lifetime friends.

As far as growing up, the bodily changes, emotional changes were hard, like with all kids.. struggling to find my place in the world. But I don’t remember it coming from the kids in school. I think the struggle was inside me.

Keep in mind that it was a small school system. I’d gone to school with the same kids from kindergarten. I graduated with kids that I went to preschool with. We were a tight knit bunch. There were the “popular” cheerleader/football types, and the offbeat band types… like anywhere else. Overall, I think I was mostly oblivious to the peer pressure, mean kids middle school mess, not ever being one to follow the crowd. I had my little group of friends (mostly fellow band members and kids I went to church with) & was happy. I’ve been that way a lot though throughout my life. I have my little world & the rest doesn’t matter so much. Not always a good thing.. but very useful, it turns out, when it comes to peer pressure & stuff like that.

Maybe that’s why I don’t understand youngest DD’d intense need to be liked & her “social butterfly” personality. I try to understand her, but i just don’t.

Sometimes the things the kids say to me just floor me. I’m sure it’s because they’re in a bigger school system that they just transferred into this year. All their school friendships are newly formed. They’re still finding their spot.

I need to remember that.

I just realized that I went all over the place in this post.. jumping from one thing to another. It’s all jumbled. Hope it’s not too much of a mess to read!

Answers

These questions were the Thursday Thirteen post of Renee.

1. Well we know that my blog is mainly a “Mommy Blog” with some other stuff thrown in. How would you describe your blog?
Titanium: My blog is a compilation of random thoughts. Sometimes about me, sometimes about my children, sometimes about nothing at all.

2. Why should I visit and post a comment on your blog?
Titanium: It’s wonderful, of course! πŸ™‚

3. Did you use one of the blog templates that came with your site, design your own template or get someone else to do it for you?
Titanium: I found one online & when I couldn’t get it to work, Ginger emailed me a template. I then tweaked it a bit to make it work for me.

4. As you can see, I don’t have a whole lot of the extras on my blog…because I don’t understand how to do them. Do you have a bunch of stuff on your blog and why?
Titanium: I have a few extras. I found them when surfing. When something caught my eye, I followed the link & put it on my blog.

5. Wow! This coming up with 13 questions about you is pretty hard! Maybe I should skip a few? (see how I did that? It’s still a question, but it doesn’t really look like one ;o) )
Titanium: Yeah.. but you’re not skipping any.. are you?

6. First thing in the morning…blog first or eat first?
Titanium: Weekdays – work first. Weekends – blog first.

7. For all the Mommy Bloggers, who gets up first? You or the kids?
Titanium: I get up first during the week. My son gets up first on weekends.

8. For all the single bloggers out there… who fixed your first meal?
Titanium: I’m a single mom, but that’s not what you’re talking about , is it?

9. Are you doing something else while blogging right now? (I’m also listening to the radio)
Titanium: Watching an NBA game on tv.

10. Am I the only blogger out there still using a dial up connection?
Titanium: Probably so. I love my cable connection! It’s faster than DSL was, I think.

11. Right now at the Blog Olympics I’ve got 3 silver medals. Have you checked the olympics out? Are you playing? Do you even know what I’m talking about?
Titanium: I don’t know what that is.. gonna have to check it out.

12. Do you secretly long for a bunch of comments on your blog too?
Titanium: Yes, I LOVE comments!

13. What question are you dying to ask me?
Titanium: Did you get as many responses as you had hoped for? πŸ™‚

Thirteen Things about Titanium

Since I forgot to do the Thursday Thirteen yesterday, I will do Friday Fourteen today:

1. When I was pregnant, I loved grape Kool-aid. I like that flavor now, but it’s not a favorite.

2. Now I tend to drink Crystal Light more. My favorite flavors are Rasberry Ice and Peach Rasberry.

3. I’ve been trying to drink more water, but have been drinking Crystal Light instead most of the time.

4. I’ve always thought it would be cool to have auburn hair. Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough to just go for it and trade my light brown/blonde hair for auburn.

5. I watched “Must Love Dogs” this week. It’s a cute movie.

6. I’m reading a book called “Shadow Game,” by Christine Feehan.

7. I use a headset at work when talking on the phone, so I don’t constantly hold the phone between my ear & shoulder.

8. Sometimes people think I sound like I’m talking in a tunnel.. if I don’t have the voice tube in the right spot.

9. I love reading the newspaper every day. Since I don’t watch the news, this is my main source of local news.

10. I also keep some of the newspapers, for lining the bottom of Dobby’s cage.

11. I need to start getting to bed earlier. I’ve been tired a lot this week.

12. I’ve been updating my resume this week.. switching from an experience based resume to a skills based resume.

13. I’ve been working on a cash flow plan this week.. isn’t that a nice way to say the dreaded B word? (budget)

14. I’ve been using Dave Ramsey’s envelope system this week for food & gas purchases. I can already tell that it’s making a difference in my spending habits.

A conversation I had today…

Me: I’m trying to be like Lily (main character in a book I’m reading that this friend shared with me), but my telepathic abilities are NOT working. Darn.

Friend: I couldn’t figure out where that was coming from. Wait until the next book. You will really want her powers.

Me: I keep saying in my head.. to the people around here that I hear talking all the time.. shut up & work! But it’s not working. They just keep on talking.

Friend: Bring duct tape to work. When they start talking, pull it out and start cutting off strips of it. Then hold it up towards them as if to measure the length. I bet that’ll shut them up!

I have to say that I agree. It would probably shut them up. They’d be mute from shock. πŸ™‚
